Salvage workers pulled two bodies from beneath the crumbled wreckage of a New York State Thruway bridge Saturday and continued hunting for four others, officials said.

Police on foot, in the water and in helicopters, meanwhile, widened the search of Schoharie Creek at the bridge site and downstream in the Mohawk River, into which the creek flows.

After nearly two days of work to remove twisted steel and broken concrete, searchers were able to recover the bodies of Mary Lou Peck, 47, and her daughter Kristen, 22, from the car that had been taking them to a bridal shower, Trooper Edward Dyer said.

The car was found Friday after a salvage crew used jackhammers and acetylene torches to clear away debris, said Maj. John Herritage, local commander of the New York State Police.

One body was seen inside the crushed vehicle Friday, and the other was found Saturday. Another body was found Friday in wreckage downstream.

Six bodies have been found since the bridge crumbled and fell into the flooded Schoharie on April 4. Authorities say they believe 10 people were killed.
