Showcase Design House Opening Set
Think pink--Rose pink, that is. And Hanover green and Ice blue.
These three Dunn-Edwards Corp. paint colors make up the color palette unifying the various rooms and other areas in the 1987 Pasadena Showcase House of Design opening April 26 in La Canada Flintridge.
As in past years, each room of the 71-year-old Mission Revival style house at 700 Berkshire Ave. will be transformed by a different interior designer who donated his or her services.
Work on the exterior elements--gardens, fountains and other landscaping elements--will also be donated by landscape architects, landscape contractors and nurserymen. The lot has more than two acres--down from the original 10 acres.
This year’s house was built in 1916 as a spec house by developer Frank P. Flint, for whom the Flintridge part of La Canada Flintridge is named. About 10,000 square feet of living area will be open to the public. (The house also has another 10,000 square feet in attic and basement space.)
Of particular interest to readers of this column who don’t reside in 10,000-square-foot houses on two-acre lots is the guest house, “Chez Petit.” Tomkins & Tomkins Interiors Inc., San Marino, and interior design students of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in downtown Los Angeles will transform this structure that includes a four-car garage into a habitation with which most readers can identify.
The kitchen of the guest house and the main house kitchen both feature Wood-Mode raised panel cabinets with a frost-on-oak finish. The main house kitchen and the adjoining breakfast room are designed by Angie Sheldon of Imagination! (Design Concepts), Beverly Hills. A Trausen built-in refrigerator and a Viking range add the professional kitchen touch.
If you want to know what are the effects created by stenciling, trompe l’oeil and faux marble, the 23rd Showcase House is the place to start.
It will be open daily except Mondays and Tuesdays through May 24. The hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.
As in past years, food and crafts will be available in great abundance at the house.
All proceeds benefit the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and youth music education in the San Gabriel Valley, according to Betty Rossiter of the sponsoring Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee.
Advance tickets, if ordered before Wednesday, are $8. After that date and at the door tickets are $10 each. To order, include a stamped self-addressed envelope and a check for the correct amount to: Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee, P.O. Box 80262, San Marino, Calif. 91108. Allow two weeks for delivery. The tickets are good for any time the house is open.
Parking will be available on weekdays at Seco Street and Arroyo Boulevard near the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and on Saturdays and Sundays at the JPL parking lot at the end of Oak Grove Drive north of Foothill Boulevard. There will be no parking at the house itself.
This house and its grounds should be helpful to anyone interested in home improvement and design, as well as landscaping.
