Thousands of Southern Californians smeared on suntan lotion, slipped on their walking shoes and set off Saturday on a local version of a nationwide walkathon to raise money for the March of Dimes. Mayor Tom Bradley, Wickes corporate Chairman Sanford Sigoloff and television personality Sarah Purcell kicked off the walkathon at Clover Park in Santa Monica, urging on hundreds of people who set off on a course that took many of them as far 32 kilometers. Other walkathons were held in Antelope Valley, Long Beach, Pasadena and the San Fernando, San Gabriel and Santa Clarita valleys. Throughout the country, tens of thousands of Americans in 1,400 communities took part in the annual WalkAmerica fund-raising effort.
