An Israeli judge in the Nazi war crimes trial of John Demjanjuk angrily cut off the retired U.S. auto worker’s American defense attorney when he accused a documents expert of giving false testimony. Presiding Judge Dov Levine ordered the attorney, Mark O’Connor, to sit down, adding: “This is not the way to talk to a witness.” O’Connor had accused Gideon Epstein of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, who was the sixth expert witness to authenticate a key piece of prosecution evidence, a Nazi SS identity card issued in Demjanjuk’s name. The defense claims the card was forged by the Soviets, who supplied it to Israel for the trial.
