San Diego High School Baseball : Grossmont Blanks Granite Hills

Grossmont High School pitcher Lance Dickson (9-2) struck out seven and allowed only three hits in a 8-0 complete-game victory over top-ranked Granite Hills Friday in a Grossmont League game at Granite Hills.

Granite Hills (12-2, 20-4) leads second-place Grossmont (10-4, 18-6) by two games in the league standings with two games remaining in the regular season.

“If we were going to get beat, I’m glad it was against one of the best pitchers in the county,” said Gordon Thompson, Granite Hills coach. In its five previous games, Granite Hills had outscored opponents, 62-24.

Doug Davis hit two solo home runs and Dave Entrekin added a solo shot in the fifth for Grossmont.

The last time Dickson faced Granite Hills, he lost, 7-3, lasting 6 innings.

“When we beat him early, we didn’t feel we had seen vintage Dickson,” Thompson said. “We beat him up pretty badly that day. But (Friday) was his day.”

GROSSMONT LEAGUE

Santana 4, El Cajon Valley--Bruce Moutaw went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs to lead No. 5 Santana (10-5, 16-8). Mark Sherman went the distance, striking out four to get the victory. Moutaw hit a solo homer in the fifth and a two-run home run in the seventh.

CITY EASTERN LEAGUE

Morse 3, Serra 1--Robert Cooper pitched a four-hitter and struck out six to lead Morse (6-7, 12-12) at home. Serra’s Mike Hamilton went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored a run for Morse 6-7, 12-12)

Patrick Henry 6, Mira Mesa 4--Starter David Schiff (3-0) allowed two hits in five innings and Cory Powell pitched two no-hit innings for the save at Patrick Henry. Lance Lowery’s RBI double in the fifth highlighted a three-run inning for Patrick Henry. Patrick Henry is 9-4 and 14-6-1.

Point Loma 2, Madison 1--Judd Franklin singled to left, scoring Israel Stanley from second in the second inning with the winning run at Point Loma. Starter Jeff Gattis (4-1) went 4 innings to pace Point Loma (6-7, 12-9). Madison is 9-4, 15-8.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

La Jolla 5, Mission Bay 0--Brent Woodall threw a three-hitter and struck out 10 to lead La Jolla (7-6, 14-9) and knock No. 8 Mission Bay (9-4, 16-7) out of first place in the league.

Clairemont 14, University City 4--Rick Doane went 3 for 3 with 6 RBIs to lead No. 6 Clairemont (10-3, 13-9) past University City (2-11, 4-16) and into first place. Mike DiGiordano was 3 for 5 and Dan Moran got on base 6 times and scored 5 runs. Clairemont (10-3).

Kearny 3, USDHS 1--Scot Wellish went the distance giving up four hits and striking out 12 to lead Kearny (3-10, 5-14) past USDHS (8-5, 16-7). Wellish went 1 for 3 and drove in the winning run with a single in the sixth.

CITY CENTRAL LEAGUE

Crawford 5, Christian 1--Jeff Wilcox (4-3) didn’t allow a hit after the second inning, en route to the complete-game victory at Crawford. Wilcox struck out five and allowed three hits to pace Crawford (6-5-2, 7-12-3) over No. 10 Christian (9-4, 15-7).

Briefly--Lincoln 6, Hoover 5

METRO CONFERENCE

Montgomery 3, Hilltop 2--Emilio Camarena walked and then scored on a double by Jacob Saaib with two outs in the fourth for Montgomery (5-6, 13-12) at Hilltop (7-4, 10-9). Brett Butterfield had a solo home run in the fourth to lead Hilltop, which has lost two straight.

Castle Park 6, Mar Vista 4--Steve Alvarez hit a three-run homer in the third to lead Castle Park (8-3, 19-6) to its eighth straight league victory.
