AQMD May Issue 3 Exemptions for Open Storage
Air quality officials this week are expected to exempt three South Bay facilities from a requirement prohibiting the open storage of petroleum coke.
An official from the South Coast Air Quality Management District, which enforces air pollution regulations in the Los Angeles area, said the exemptions will be issued if no public opposition to the waivers is received before Thursday.
No one protested the proposed exemptions at a public hearing last week in San Pedro. The district will accept written protests through Wednesday.
The AQMD staff has determined that Applied Industrial Materials Corp., which operates the three facilities, has successfully controlled dust emissions from the sites while operating them during the past six months with temporary permits, said spokesman Ron Ketcham.
Permanent permits would allow the company to continue its open storage of the material with periodic monitoring by the AQMD.
Applied Industrial Materials Corp. operates storage sites at 19500 Crenshaw Blvd. in Torrance and at Pier G and Reeves Field in the Port of Los Angeles.
