An appeals court in Genoa, Italy, upheld life terms imposed on Palestinian terrorist leader Abul Abbas and two confederates in the October, 1985, hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro in the Mediterranean. The court also extended the 7 1/2-year sentence on Abdullrahim Khaled to life imprisonment after accepting evidence that Khaled was one of the chief organizers of the hijacking. But it rejected a harsher sentence for Magied al Molqi, who was jailed for 30 years for the murder of wheelchair-bound American passenger Leon Klinghoffer, 69. All four of those under life sentences had been tried in absentia and are still at large.
