Movie theater-quality sound is coming into the home. Consumers are paying $150 to $700 to buy electronic decoders, patented by Dolby Laboratories Inc. of San Francisco, and a second set of stereo speakers to approximate so-called “surround-sound” in their homes. Dolby Labs, which also engineered sonic advances in movie theaters, estimates that 300,000 decoders have been sold so far, but officials for the company expect the devices to get more popular as more videocassettes and television shows utilizing surround-sound technology become available.
