Acid Test for Removing Driveway Rust
Since we published our suggestion for using oxalic acid to remove rust from driveways, we’ve had several where-to-get-it requests, the most recent one from Joseph Stern of Sunland. Can you help with a concrete source or two, or will none of our readers be able to pass the acid test?
Julian Wolkovitch of Rancho Palos Verdes is looking for formal Shakti shoes in Sizes 10 or 11 ; he says they are comfortable because the heel is level with the ball of the foot. Can you help with this difficult feat, or shall we level with him and tell him it’s a new ballgame?
Anne Sirrine of Downey would like to get her hands on an all-metal umbrella (including the shade) for her garden; the others disintegrate too quickly, she says. Can you test your mettle by ironing out this garden-variety problem for Sirrine, or will she be convinced that here is one shady business she should pay no heed to?
Janette Cardan of Beverly Hills is searching for Thai cotton fabric, since she can no longer find Thai cotton dresses in the stores. Can you help change Cardan into a cloth-horse, or will she end up fit to be Thaid?
Reader-to-Reader Help Line: Irene at (714) 621-2343 is all spaced out because she can’t find an adult T-shirt with a picture of Pluto (the dog, not the planet); according to Disneyland, she says, the shirt is no longer available. Please stop dogging it and make sure that Irene is in seventh heaven. . . . Marti at (213) 278-4668 wants to get her hands on some Unpetroleum Jelly ; the manufacturer went out of business a few years ago. Please undo the damage left by this unusual request, or else Marti might be unwise enough to unleash a few unprintable words. . . . For a grandson, Mrs. Higgins at (213) 225-0513 is looking for the Mr. Mouth game made at one time by Tomy; she will even take a used one, as long as all the parts are there. Please help before she gets a mouthful from her grandson as a parting gesture. . . . In order to finish a sweater, Lucy at (213) 649-5726 needs a ball or two of Lot 6-164, Shade 5649 Blond Brunswick Quickmist yarn . Please get on the ball and make sure that Lucy won’t have to sweat out her project much longer.

Muriel Helfenbein of Pasadena, who was searching for clear-plastic sweater storage boxes with drawers, should soon be a genuine sweater girl again. Fred Hearn, president of Container Arts, No. 26, Topanga Plaza in Canoga Park, (818) 884-3003, says his firm carries the boxes in various sizes and price ranges, from $4.49 to $13.99 each. Luisa Somogyl of West Hollywood says the Plastic Mart, 2101 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica, (213) 451-1701, has a similar assortment of plastic boxes with drawers. We also have a mail order source. Eula Bryant of Oceanside, Rosie Le Boeuf of Santa Barbara and N. Nichols of Los Angeles wrote that the Hold Everything catalogue, P.O. Box 7456, San Francisco, Calif. 94120-7456, has a set of six sweater drawers for $36 plus shipping. Since Hold Everything is put out by Williams-Sonoma, perhaps a Williams-Sonoma store stocks the plastic boxes.
Mary Yule of Sierra Madre, who was looking for brush rollers with boar bristles, need not be bored much longer. Mrs. Sebenius Griffiths of Pasadena and Sue Harding of Indian Wells wrote that the Fuller Brush catalogue lists the rollers for $5 (No. 10021A, large) and $4 (No. 10075A, small). Helen Simon of Malibu, who was after Sani Wax oil polish, is in luck; we have two local sources. The one nearer to Malibu is Koontz Hardware, 661 N. And Vaughnie Belle Eddas of Alhambra says that San Marino Hardware, 2134 Huntington Drive, San Marino, sells a 28-ounce bottle of Sani Wax for $4.95. For other outlets, Dorothy Strimple of Glendale suggests writing the manufacturer, Sani Wax, P.O. Box 940, Dodge City, Kan. 67801.
