The Air Force proposed to locate at least 200 of 500 new Midgetman nuclear missiles on mobile launchers inside “igloos” at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana. The service, in a draft environmental impact statement filed with the Environmental Protection Agency, outlined a massive construction program to accommodate the new weapon, including new facilities with about 3.2 million square feet of work space; 1,746 new units of military family housing, and rebuilding of highway bridges.
