Gardena Council OKs Zoning Shifts

Share

The Gardena City Council last week took another step toward the eventual development of a shopping center on the East Side by approving changes to the city’s General Plan and rezoning about 18 acres along the north and south sides of Artesia Boulevard between Normandie and Vermont avenues.

The city purchased the land from the state Department of Transportation and intends to sell it to developer Alexander Haagen, who plans to build a shopping center similar to his Manhattan Village Mall in Manhattan Beach.

The city has a yearlong option to purchase another nine acres at Artesia Boulevard and Vermont, which would also be sold to Haagen.

Specific plans for the new shopping center are expected to be submitted within 60 to 90 days, according to City Manager Ken Landau.
