Restrooms: Whose Reponsibility?

Share

Re “The Restroom Wars” (by Beth Ann Krier, Sept. 9):

To build and maintain public bathrooms in any modern city should be the exclusive responsibility of the Health Department. Service station dealers are not civil servants and they should not have to take care of public service.

The station dealers hire and pay their employees to repair cars, to pump gas, to work as cashiers. Their employees are not sanitary workers. To force them to continuously take care of the mess and smell after anybody who chooses to urinate, defecate, vomit, shave, shoot up or whatever is not only outrageous but very possibly unlawful as well.

If the good-hearted city fathers are ever so concerned about the public’s need for more public bathrooms, then they should get their act together and build some without expecting independent private businessmen to take care of the Health Department’s duties.
