Three thieves walked into Saks Fifth Avenue on San Francisco’s Union Square at midday, hammered their way into a jewelry display case, scooped up more than $50,000 worth of merchandise and fled, but two were arrested a short time later, police said. A spokeswoman for the store said the bandits walked in shortly after noon Saturday, moved directly to the jewelry display case, “took three hammers out of a bag they were carrying and started to bang on it. It took them four knocks to break the glass. Once it was open they got one scoop of jewelry and ran.” Officers intercepted the getaway car not far from the store, forced it to stop and arrested Joseph Bennett, 27, and Marvin Mouton, 28, both of San Francisco, after they fled on foot into a nearby housing project. Both men were booked on suspicion of armed robbery. The third suspect was still being sought.
