Jessica McClure’s 58-Hour Ordeal Captivates the Nation
As I see the face of Vice President George Bush peering intently at Jessica McClure in her hospital bed, and witness the energy and caring of the country during this drama, I think of the thousands of poor and homeless spawned by this Administration. Countless little children will never benefit from such loving gazes, or have adequate medical care.
As Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) reminded us at the outset of the Judge Robert Bork confirmation hearings, thousands will die from the neglects of the current Administration.
There must be a way to harness the power of caring. As it now stands without programs like Kennedy’s comprehensive health care plan, the stricken of this country will never be rescued from their wells.
