ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : South Coast League : Johnson Returns and El Toro Wins Big, 52-7
Bret Johnson, El Toro High School quarterback, returned to lead the Chargers to a 52-7 South Coast League victory over San Clemente Friday night at Mission Viejo Stadium.
Johnson missed El Toro’s last four games with a strained knee ligament and lasted only one series into the second half. He completed 13 of 17 passes for 192 yards and 4 touchdowns with 1 interception.
El Toro (5-2, 1-1) scored in the first quarter on a five-yard run by tailback David Nemeth. Johnson connected for three touchdown passes in the second quarter. He hit slotback Sean Drinkwater for touchdown passes of 9 and 10 yards, and then Jason Vivonia caught a 20-yard scoring pass to give the Chargers a 26-0 halftime lead.
After a San Clemente fumble at its five-yard line on the second play of the second half, Johnson connected with wide receiver Chris McCarthy on a two-yard touchdown pass.
Johnson was then taken out of the game, but El Toro didn’t stop scoring, adding three touchdowns on the ground. Ken Romaniszyn scored on a 50-yard run. Ken Moorhead scored from three yards out, and Vivonia scored on a 51-yard run.
San Clemente’s (2-5, 0-2) only score came in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard run by tailback Kevin Harrison.
