A 74-year-old Tibetan monk and historian jailed by China for independence activities has died in a prison in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa, Tibetan groups in India said Saturday.

The monk, Lobsang Wangchuk, died in Drapchi Prison on Nov. 4, a statement from the Tibetan exiles’ secretariat in Dharmsala said.

A statement from the Tibetan Youth Congress also announced the death and said it stemmed from a beating that Wangchuk received earlier in the year for refusing to admit that his views on Tibetan independence were wrong.

Wangchuk was first arrested in 1959 for involvement in the Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule. He was detained without trial until 1962, then sentenced to a 10-year prison term. He was arrested again in 1981 and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
