The wife of the late CIA Director William J. Casey handed over a check for $140,000 to organizers of a Nicaraguan resistance group who pledged to use the funds to rehabilitate injured Contras. “Bill had a great commitment to this cause,” said Sophia Casey, whose husband died of pneumonia May 6 in the midst of intense scrutiny of his role in funneling covert funds to the Contras when such aid was banned by Congress. When Casey died, his family asked that sympathizers send donations for the “freedom fighters” in lieu of flowers. An official with the Nicaraguan Resistance Educational Foundation said the money will allow the rebels to expand the rehabilitation effort.
