Officials of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, which made international headlines in 1979 after a near-meltdown of its Unit No. 2 reactor, said they have no current plans to restart the damaged reactor. General Public Utilities Corp. said it is still cleaning up the reactor but has decided against spending money to make it operational again. Still, officials said that they could change their minds and restore the reactor if energy needs change substantially. They said that 65% of the radioactive fuel has been removed from the reactor, located on the Susquehanna River, 10 miles south of Harrisburg, Pa. The $1-billion cleanup effort was expected to be completed by the spring of 1989.
