France paid a $3-million ransom and promised to stop selling arms to Iraq to win the freedom of two French hostages in Muslim West Beirut on Nov. 27, a pro-Syrian magazine reported. Ash Shiraa, the magazine that unveiled the U.S.-Iran arms-for-hostage deal last year, also quoted “well-informed sources” as saying that the issue of all foreign hostages in Lebanon will be settled within six months. “The captors received $1.5 million for each of the hostages, and France promised to stop supplying Iraq with any new weapons or spare parts,” the magazine said. The two freed captives, Roger Auque and Jean-Louis Normandin, were taken hostage earlier this year.
