Area Roundup : Ex-Fullerton Baseball Coach Garrido to Be Honored at Annual Fund-Raiser

Augie Garrido, former Cal State Fullerton baseball coach, will be roasted in “An Evening with Augie Garrido,” Jan. 21 at the Red Lion Inn in Costa Mesa.

Garrido, who took over the University of Illinois baseball program last spring, will be roasted by National League all-star third baseman Tim Wallach, a former Titan; Hall of Fame pitcher Lefty Gomez, and 300-game winner Don Sutton. The event is the Fullerton baseball program’s annual fund-raising dinner.

In his 16 years at Fullerton, Garrido won 12 conference championships, four regional titles and two NCAA titles.

Dinner tickets cost $100 per person, or $1,000 for a table of nine plus one major league player. For more information, call 540-7000.

Herschel Musick, former Santa Ana Valley High School baseball coach and three-time Orange County coach of the year, will teach “Coaching and Training Youth Baseball Teams,” a seven-week series sponsored by Rancho Santiago College’s community services division.

The class, Jan. 5 through Feb. 23, will be held every Tuesday night from 7 to 10 at El Modena High School in Orange.

Area Notes

The Rancho Santiago College men’s cross-country team, which won the Orange Empire championship and placed sixth in the state meet, will sponsor an alumni race Dec. 19 at Irvine Park in Orange. The race, open to the public, starts at 9 a.m.
