Fundamental Baptists Take Protest on Bakker to Church in Lancaster
The Rev. Robert L. Hymers of Los Angeles and about 20 members of his Fundamentalist Baptist Tabernacle picketed a Lancaster church on Sunday to protest appearances there by deposed PTL leader Jim Bakker.
Hymers, who once prayed for the death of pro-abortion Supreme Court justices, claims Bakker has presided over a weekly service with the Antelope Valley Springs of Life ministry for three weeks. Hymers said the church violated Scripture that says “preachers should be blameless” by allowing Bakker into its ministry after he was defrocked by his own church after a sex scandal.
The pastor of the Lancaster church said Bakker and his wife Tammy attend his church when they are in the area. But he denied that Bakker preaches and said there are no “immediate plans” for him to begin ministering.
