The Rev. Jesse Jackson called for the United Nations to intervene immediately to restore peace to the Middle East and establish a separate homeland for Palestinians. Amid reports of increased fighting between Israeli security forces and Palestinians in Israeli-occupied territories, the candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination said the United Nations should sponsor a peace conference on formation of a separate “state without weapons” for the Palestinians, while assuring Israeli security and automomy. Speaking in Newton, Iowa, Jackson said other candidates are guilty of a “betrayal of silence” in not speaking out about violence in the Middle East.
