Don’t Dismiss Voters

Share

I object to the offhand dismissal of the electoral process in the article “Few Dare to Rock the Boat in San Diego’s Political Waters” (Feb. 28). Barry M. Horstman wrote that “. . . San Diego’s legislative incumbents appear headed for easy reelection campaigns in which they will face relatively minor opposition.”

The article implies that all we can do to change our government is to fold our hands and wait for incumbents to “ . . . run for higher posts, retire . . . or (die),” which is hardly an antidote for the pervasive voter apathy in this country. I, for one, intend to make sure that some incumbents face more than “relatively minor opposition.”

The Times attempted to create a self-fulfilling prophecy when it did not deign to cover Dr. Dan Kripke’s announcement of his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the 41st Congressional District. Five other media representatives attended his press conference. The Times generally does an excellent job of covering local politics, but it was not “There for (us), every day” that day.
