At least eight bombs exploded in the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka and sent thousands of people fleeing for shelter from opposition rallies, where they had gathered for a day of protest against national election results. Police said there were no reports of injuries, and no group claimed responsibility for the explosions. At the rallies in the city’s main square, opposition leaders Hasina Wajed and Khaleda Zia said the people will not accept the results of Thursday’s balloting, in which the governing Jatiya Party won 199 of 226 of the contested parliamentary seats for which results were announced.
