Brigham Young University has shuffled its 1988 football schedule in order to play the defending national champion Miami Hurricanes on television in its final game of the regular season.

The game in Miami’s Orange Bowl originally had been scheduled for Sept. 10, but it has been moved to Dec. 3, BYU Coach LaVell Edwards said, “primarily for television.” It will be carried on ESPN.

“I think it’s great,” said Edwards. “I’d much rather play them down there in December than in the heat of September. Plus, they’re the type of team that can beat you up. So, from an injury standpoint, It’s a lot better this way.”

As part of a two-game contract, Miami will play at BYU in 1990. The Hurricanes won the 1987 national title after beating Oklahoma for a 12-0 season record. They also captured the No. 1 ranking in 1983.

BYU made one other switch in next fall’s schedule, moving the game against Texas in Cougar Stadium from Sept. 24 to Sept. 8, a Thursday night. Last season, the Cougars beat Texas, 22-17, at Austin.
