Rukeyser Leaving NBC to Be Media Adviser

M. S. (Bud) Rukeyser, NBC’s executive vice president for communications, said he is leaving the network to go into business for himself, giving “advice and counsel to media companies.” Rukeyser, 56, has been at NBC for 30 years, the last 15 as the network’s chief spokesman. He is one of several top NBC executives who are eligible for a lucrative severance plan if they take retirement by the end of 1988, although Rukeyser insisted that was not why he is leaving.

“I thought if I was ever going to do something else, try something on my own, it was going to have to be now or never,” Rukeyser said.

Betty Hudson, now head of publicity for NBC, will become the network’s spokeswoman, Rukeyser said.
