Sheriff Sherman Block was among the three Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials shaken but unhurt when the small plane in which they were traveling was struck by lightning during the midweek storm, a spokeswoman said Friday.

The aircraft, owned by the Sheriff’s Department, was damaged on the right wing tip, and the rudder suffered scorch marks when the lightning struck as the plane was flying at 9,000 feet over the Los Angeles area about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The plane, which was approaching Long Beach Municipal Airport when it was hit, landed safely.

Block, 63, was returning from Sacramento, where he attended a meeting of the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training.
