‘Kung Fu Master’
France, 1987, 80 minutes, 10:30 p.m. Director Agnes Varda’s view of a genuinely impossible love affair between a 40-year-old divorcee and a 14-year-old boy master of the “Kung Fu” video game. Based upon an idea by lead actress Jane Birkin--and starring Varda’s son as the boy--it initially unfolds as a comedy; the woman tries to convince herself that she’s not acting like a complete fool. However, the jarring, cynical conclusion reveals that the film maker is less than sympathetic to the character’s plight.
