Countywide : 14 Students Win Honors at State Science Fair

Fourteen junior and senior high school students from Orange County were winners in the annual State Science Fair held at the California Museum of Science and Industry in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park this week.

About 490 students from 25 counties statewide made science projects for the competition.

The winners in the senior division (ninth through 12th grade) were:

Ted Hulsy, a sophomore at Mission Viejo High School; Jennifer Mata, a sophomore at Woodbridge High School in Irvine, third place; Chih Hung Wong, a senior at University High School in Irvine, third place.

Felix Hamilton, a freshman at University, third place; Mike Catarineau, a junior at Woodbridge, honorable mention; Dominic Manzo, a sophomore at Foothill High School in Santa Ana, second place; Monisha Mowtwani, a freshman at Woodbridge, honorable mention.

The winners in the junior division (seventh and eighth grade) were:

Jennifer Stahlhut, St. Bonaventure School in Huntington Beach, best overall science project in the junior division and first place in health and medicine; Kenny Krueger, seventh grade at St. Bonaventure, third place.

Ray Bateman of Marineview Junior High School in Huntington Beach won first place in biochemistry; Paul McGinnis, Marineview, honorable mention; April Kuhlman , Vista View School in Fountain Valley, honorable mention.

Gregory Charlop, Vista Verde School in Irvine, third place in microbiology; Lynn Ikemori, Springview School in Huntington Beach, second place.
