Woodson Close to Signing With Rockets
Mike Woodson, the Clippers’ top scorer over the last two seasons, is close to signing a reported four-year contract for $500,000 a season with the Houston Rockets.
“We’ve agreed to some things, and I’m waiting for them to send me a contract,” Woodson said Wednesday of the Rockets’ offer. “Hopefully, it’ll happen in the next few days.”
The deal would reunite the 6-foot 5-inch guard with Don Chaney, the former Clipper coach who is the Rockets’ new head coach.
The Clippers would not get any compensation if Woodson, an unrestricted free agent, signs with another team.
The Clippers reportedly had offered Woodson a two-year deal after his five-year contract, which earned him $375,000 last season, expired. Because of salary-cap considerations, the Clippers are waiting to sign their unrestricted free agents after they’ve signed their three first-round picks--Danny Manning, Charles Smith and Gary Grant.
Woodson, 30, an eight-year veteran, averaged 17.5 points a game over the last two seasons.
