San Francisco park officials are readying a proposal to freeze one of the 10 lakes in Golden Gate Park so that it can be used for ice skating. Two shallow lakes are under consideration, according to the San Francisco Examiner: Metson Lake, a one-acre pond on Middle Drive, and Elk Glen Lake, a two-acre lake on King Drive. “We want to find a location that is environmentally sound and at the same time offer an area that is accessible to parking,” city parks Supt. Barney Barron said. He said the idea would be taken up by a committee of the Recreation-Park Commission on Aug. 4. Freezing a lake and constructing a suspended roof and enclosure would cost between $500,000 and $750,000, Barron estimated.
