Thousands of police officers in India’s western Gujarat state went on strike after soldiers disarmed some of the officers to prevent a mutiny, senior police officials said. They said most officers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s biggest city, failed to report for work after a strike call by newly banned police unions. On Sunday, the government had cracked down on members of the 59,000-member police force whom it accused of undermining the state. Police union head Ashok Bhatt then issued the strike call to protest the crackdown.
