Quayle Cuts Off Press Parley
Republican vice presidential nominee Dan Quayle abruptly cut off a scheduled news conference this afternoon after refusing to answer questions about his service in the Indiana National Guard during the Vietnam War.
Instead the senator answered questions from farmers at the Missouri State Fair. Most of their questions centered on Medicare reform, drought relief legislation and the newly-signed trade bill, which Quayle opposed in the Senate debate but described today as “a good first step to send a message that we are serious about trade.” Earlier, at the Colombia, Mo., airport, Quayle ignored protesters chanting “Quayle is a chicken” and defended his Guard service.
