George F. Allen; Defense Executive

George F. Allen, 60, a former congressional aide who became a Defense Department executive in 1987. Allen was appointed to his Pentagon position last October after 17 years on Capitol Hill with the staff of the House Appropriations Committee. He had served as the panel’s minority staff assistant responsible for defense matters. He had also served as a staff assistant to the appropriations subcommittee on military construction. Allen came to Washington in 1969 as an administrative assistant to Rep. Bill Chappell (D-Fla.), joining the committee staff two years later. Before joining the government, he spent 21 years as a journalist, including a stint as political editor of the Daytona Beach, Fla., News Journal from 1962 to 1969. In the air en route to Europe on Thursday of a heart attack.
