NFL Exhibition Roundup : Smith Helps Redskins Defeat Falcons, 34-17

Timmy Smith rushed for 99 yards and scored twice from a yard out as the Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins beat the Atlanta Falcons, 34-17, Saturday night in an exhibition finale before 51,400 fans at Birmingham, Ala.

Smith’s second touchdown capped an 88-yard drive and put the Redskins (3-1) ahead to stay, 21-17, late in the second period.

Defensive end Charles Mann’s 12-yard scoring run with a fumble gave the Redskins a 14-3 lead, but Atlanta (2-2) rallied to take a 17-14 lead on two scoring runs by Gerald Riggs.

The Redskins added Chip Lohmiller’s field goals of 23 and 27 yards, and Mark Rypien’s 15-yard scoring pass to Mike Oliphant.

Green Bay 27, New York Jets 24--Quarterback Don Majkowski guided the Packers to a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns scored by Paul Ott Carruth to overcome the Jets before 42,098 fans at Madison, Wis.

Carruth’s 11-yard touchdown run with 6:27 left gave the Packers (1-2-1) the winning margin.

The Packers went ahead, 20-17, on Majkowski’s 16-yard scoring pass to Carruth with 9:29 left, capping a 74-yard drive. But New York’s Bobby Humphrey took the ensuing kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown to give the Jets (1-3) a 24-20 lead.

Green Bay took a 13-0 halftime lead on field goals of 50 and 36 yards by Max Zendejas, and Randy Wright’s 18-yard pass to rookie Sterling Sharpe.

The Jets rallied in the third quarter to take a 17-13 lead on a 45-yard field goal by Pat Leahy and touchdown passes of 9 and 29 yards from Ken O’Brien to Al Toon.

Houston 54, Dallas 10--Warren Moon led the Oilers on four long touchdown drives in the first half, and Lorenzo White scored on three short touchdown runs in the fourth quarter as the Oilers embarrassed the Cowboys at Irving, Tex.

Moon took the Oilers (4-0) on scoring drives of 90, 52, 72 and 66 yards as Houston built a 31-3 halftime lead in 96-degree weather before 48,400 fans in Texas Stadium. He passed 14 yards to Curtis Duncan for one touchdown and ran one yard for another score.

Dallas (2-2) scored on Darryl Clack’s one-yard run in the third quarter and a 24-yard field goal by Luis Zendejas.

Houston stopped Dallas running back Herschel Walker, who had minus four yards in five carries. Walker caught 3 passes for 83 yards.

Pittsburgh 31, New Orleans 28--Gary Anderson kicked a 20-yard field goal with 1:52 left, and the Steelers rallied from three touchdowns behind to beat the Saints at New Orleans.

After the Saints (2-2) built a 21-0 lead, Pittsburgh’s Bubby Brister hit Louis Lipps on a 48-yard scoring play 1:28 into the second quarter, then set up a 1-yard scoring plunge by Earnest Jackson when he connected with Charles Lockett on a 59-yard pass play.

New Orleans rebuilt its lead to 28-14 on a 49-yard touchdown run by rookie Craig Heyward with 25 seconds left in the first half, but the Steelers (3-1) scored 27 seconds into the second half on a 33-yard fumble return by cornerback Thomas Everett and tied the score on an 8-yard pass from Brister to Weegie Thompson with 2:19 left in the third quarter.

Brister completed 18 of 29 passes for 313 yards.
