A former employee of the Orange County Register has been arrested in a $100,000 Labor Day fire at the Santa Ana newspaper’s plant, authorities said Tuesday.

Berend Mark Timmer, 23, of Anaheim was taken into custody Monday afternoon at an undisclosed location in Fullerton and charged with one count of arson, Santa Ana Fire Department Capt. John Chambers said.

A joint investigation by the Santa Ana Fire and Police departments, as well as the Fullerton Fire and Police departments, “revealed Timmer circumvented security at the Register and entered the rolled newsprint storage area where he set the fire,” according to a statement provided by Chambers.

The 4:40 a.m. fire resulted in more than $100,000 in damage.

Timmer is also under investigation in a similar fire at Crueger Printing Co. of Fullerton on the same day as the Register fire, Chambers said. Timmer was an employee at both companies, Chambers said.

The Labor Day blaze was the Register’s third in four years. All of the fires were in the newsprint storage area, according to the newspaper.
