The Boy Scouts of America said today it will mount the largest food drive in U.S. history to attack what one public health expert termed a renewed and growing hunger problem.

The program, which in most parts of the country will run between Nov. 12 and 19, will be backed by advertising showing a woman holding her child and digging into a garbage can under the headline: “Remember the first time mom took you out to dinner?” More than 4 million Cub, Boy and Explorer Scouts will go door-to-door leaving sacks for householders to fill with non-perishable canned and packaged foods.
