UCSD Women Sweep to Championship in Volleyball Tournament

UC San Diego women’s volleyball team defeated La Verne University, 15-10, 15-12, to win the Pomona-Pitzer Tournament Saturday at Pomona.

UCSD (20-2) did not lose a game in six matches and defeated Cal State San Bernardino in the semifinals, 15-10, 15-6.

Jody Connors had 11 kills and Leisa Hagen had 30 assists as the University of San Diego defeated Southern Utah, 15-6, 15-11, 15-8.

SOCCER

Eric Wynalda scored with 1 minute 7 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the San Diego State men’s team a 1-0 victory over Old Dominion at the SMU Tournament in Dallas.

San Diego State (7-1-1) was named co-champion with Nevada-Las Vegas. SDSU’s Marcelo Balboa was named the tournament’s standout defensive player.

Peter Stahl scored 2 goals and Steve Cokkins added a third as Point Loma Nazarene College defeated host San Bernardino, 3-1.

UC San Diego’s women defeated Rochester University, 5-2, in overtime to advance to today’s finals of the SUNY-Stonybrook tournament in New York. UCSD (8-0) will play Stonybrook in the final.

The U.S. International women’s team (3-3) lost to St. Mary’s in the first round of the Stanford Tournament. St. Mary’s Desi Engle scored the game’s only goal on a second-half penalty kick.

SURFING

Top seeds Mike Lambresi of Oceanside and Dino Andino of San Clemente were upset in final qualifying heats of the US Pro Surfing tour’s $17,000 Budweiser Classic at Ocean Beach Pier.

Today’s final is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. The bodyboarding final is scheduled for 12:30.
