A Vote for Permanency

Mary A. Peairs in "Letters From Readers" (Oct. 2) concerning the very successful Expo 88 in Brisbane, Australia, does not realize that the theme of the Expo was "Leisure in the Age of Technology." That is why "sport" was chosen for the U.S. pavilion. On opening day (April 30) I noted that the lines were greatest at the American center (with California and Hawaii adjoining). This included a self-service restaurant.

I would like to see this display, somewhat reminiscent of Epcot and Disneyland, continue as a permanent display. More than 10 million people have visited Expo 88. The most impressive pavilions were the United States, Soviet Union, Great Britain, China, Japan, Italy, France, Canada and Germany.

By the way, I learned that Australia is now the world's biggest producer of diamonds and looked at millions of dollars worth.
