Local News in Brief : Apartment Complex to Be AIDS Hospice
Gay activists Monday announced plans to convert a Hollywood apartment building into an 18-bed AIDS hospice.
Gary Jonker, president of the nonprofit Christopher Street West/Los Angeles, which sponsors the annual Gay and Lesbian Pride Celebration in West Hollywood, said the group plans to close escrow this week.
The two-building complex is being purchased by Christopher Street West/Los Angeles for $350,000. Renovation is expected to begin in January, with occupancy planned for June.
Care will be provided by the Casa del Sol Hospice of the Greater Los Angeles AIDS Hospice Foundation, which plans to spend another $300,000 to renovate the complex, said David Smith, a Casa spokesman.
Smith said the complex is on Fountain Avenue in a mostly commercial area known as Hospital Row, but the address will be withheld until the current residents are notified. It will be the second-largest AIDS hospice in the Los Angeles area, he said.
A 25-bed hospice is scheduled to open later this month on the grounds of Barlow Hospital in Elysian Park.
