While Canada’s major political parties bitterly debate the Canada-U.S. free trade pact, the Communist Party of Canada proposes increasing trade with socialist states and the satirical Rhinoceros Party wants free Canadian access to both Disneyland and Disney World.

In return, the Rhinos pledge to guarantee U.S. access to Ottawa-born singer Paul Anka for 25 years, with a no-deposit, no-return clause.

The Rhinos, who are contesting 74 out of 295 districts, also promise to keep none of their promises.

The country’s nine fringe parties have little chance of electing candidates, but offer voters disenchanted with the major parties a spectrum of choices ranging from the pro-Moscow line of the Communists to the irreverent slapstick of the Rhinos, political analysts said.

At best, the fringe parties will come in second--as the Rhinos did in two Quebec districts in 1987--or hurt the main parties by siphoning off votes, analysts said.
