President Reagan good-naturedly accepted the traditional Thanksgiving turkey Friday at the White House but spared 50-pound Woody from the platter.

The large white turkey with a red neck and blue face was a gift from the National Turkey Federation, which produces about 96% of the nation’s turkey crop. Reagan said the bird will be sent to the petting zoo at the Evansville Farm in McLean, Va.

The President talked briefly to the turkey, asking it, “What are you talking about there?” and if it cared to take questions from the press. Receiving no response, Reagan said: “Come Jan. 20, I’ll come to the farm to see you.”

Woody was raised by Pete Hermanson, president of the National Turkey Federation, who operates Woodland Farms south of Story City, Iowa.
