Share

An argument outside a late-night wedding party exploded into gunfire Saturday when a man fired four shots into the front door of the reception hall before fleeing in a white pickup, authorities said. No one was reported injured.

The 10:13 p.m. incident is under investigation as a gang-related shooting, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. John Pherrin said. The gunman “shouted a gang name as he fled the scene,” Pherrin said.

A wedding reception was under way at the Veterans Memorial Hall in the 500 block of West 18th Street when three men standing outside the front door began arguing with several unknown people, Pherrin said.

One of the men struck someone with his fist before pulling a handgun out from under his sweater and firing shots into the door, Pherrin said. The handgun may have been a .357 magnum, police said.

Pherrin said he did not know whether the argument involved anyone from the wedding party.

The gunman and the two other men fled in a white, late-model Datsun or Toyota pickup, Pherrin said.
