John Miltner, vice chancellor for university advancement at UC Irvine, was named Outstanding Professional in Philanthropy for 1988 during the National Philanthropy Day Celebration held last week in Orange County.

National Philanthropy Day honors donors, founders, volunteers and professionals for their contributions to the community. A committee representing area philanthropic organizations picked the Orange County award winners.

Miltner has led UCI’s fund-raising efforts since 1983. Since then, private support to the university increased from $2.8 million in 1982-83 to a record $24.7 million in 1987-88.

Two other award winners also have UCI connections. Timothy Strader, an attorney and chairman of an Irvine-based real estate firm, was named Outstanding Volunteer in Philanthropy. He is a member of the UCI Foundation board of directors, chairman of the executive committee of UCI’s Chief Executive Roundtable and a member of the UCI Chancellor’s Club.

Rockwell International was named Outstanding Corporate/Foundation Philanthropist. UCI has been among the corporation’s many recipients of financial support, including a $500,000 donation this year to the university’s Engineering Center.
