Challenger Concedes R. I. Governor’s Race
Two weeks after the reelection of Republican Gov. Edward D. DiPrete, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bruce G. Sundlun conceded defeat Monday, but said he was leaving the door “wide open” to a third try for the office in 1990.
Sundlun held out on election night, when returns showed 202,962 votes for DiPrete and 196,188 for Sundlun. He requested a recount and counting of about 16,000 absentee ballots, a process that took two days and showed him to be the loser by about 6,800 votes.
