Two weeks after the reelection of Republican Gov. Edward D. DiPrete, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bruce G. Sundlun conceded defeat Monday, but said he was leaving the door “wide open” to a third try for the office in 1990.

Sundlun held out on election night, when returns showed 202,962 votes for DiPrete and 196,188 for Sundlun. He requested a recount and counting of about 16,000 absentee ballots, a process that took two days and showed him to be the loser by about 6,800 votes.
