$40,000 Fire Started by Gasoline in Fireplace
A blaze that began Wednesday when gasoline was used to start a fireplace fire caused $40,000 damage and caused three people to suffer smoke inhalation.
The fire, which caused $40,000 damage, was put out by neighbors before firefighters arrived at the single-story home on Springford Avenue in Paradise Hills at 5:36 p.m. The three who suffered smoke inhalation did not require hospitalization.
The owner of the home told firefighters he poured gasoline and charcoal lighting fluid on logs in the fireplace. When he lighted the fire, sparks set carpeting ablaze. He then tried to move a Christmas tree, but it also caught fire, and soon the entire living room was in flames, firefighters said.
Firefighter Larry Stewart said he believed it was the first holiday-related fire of the season.
