Juan Benitez, the Cuban-born former president, chief operating officer and director of Micron Technology Inc., was named today as deputy assistant commerce secretary.

Commerce Secretary Robert A. Mosbacher named Benitez, 38, deputy assistant secretary for science and electronics in the department’s International Trade Administration. Benitez will be responsible for developing strategies to improve the competitiveness of the U.S. science and electronics sectors, other high-technology industries and to improve their access to foreign markets.

Benitez served as national co-chairman of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly for the Bush-Quayle campaign and as national vice chairman of Entrepreneurs for Bush-Quayle.
