WORLD : Sharansky Seeks Israeli U.N. Post
Former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky lobbied for appointment as Israel’s next ambassador to the United Nations with Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir today, but there were indications that Shamir opposed the nomination.
Israel Radio said Shamir told Sharansky that he will not get the U.N. job, one of Israel’s highest diplomatic assignments. A spokesman for Shamir would not comment on the report. He said only, “It was not decided at the meeting that Mr. Sharansky would be the next ambassador.”
Foreign Minister Moshe Arens said earlier this month that Sharansky was his ministry’s only candidate for the position. No date has been set for a meeting of the committee that will decide the nomination.
