Clear skies and fair winds were forecast for the 549 yachts scheduled to start at noon today in the 42nd Newport-to-Ensenada race, the largest international yacht race in the world. Of top interest will be the duel for first to finish--and possibly an elapsed time record--between Dennis Conner’s 60-foot soft-sail catamaran Stars & Stripes and Rudy Choy’s 65-foot catamaran Aikane X-5, winner of the last two Ensenada races.

The elapsed time record is 10 hours 22 minutes, set by the 65-foot catamaran Double Bullet in 1983.
