Chargers Test Gastineau, Consider Signing Him

The Chargers confirmed Wednesday they are considering signing former New York Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau.

Gastineau, a free agent, worked out with the Chargers Tuesday. The Chargers say they will make a decision on whether to sign him later in the week.

Gastineau, who will be 33 in November, had seven sacks with the Jets last year, 107 1/2 in nine National Football League seasons. He has played in five Pro Bowls. He retired abruptly during the 1988 season because of an illness in the family but has since expressed an interest in making a comeback.

The problem, said a Charger spokesman, “is he is going to want more money than anyone else in an area (defensive line) where we are already strong.”
